Seniors help lead the way again for Tigard
TIGARD — The 2016-2017 school year was big for Tigard High School when it came to athletics.
The Tigers had a proficient year in many sports. Leading the way was the Tigard football team, which caught fire in the Class 6A state playoffs. The Tigers battled their way to the semifinal round before losing to Central Catholic in a double-overtime thriller.
The Tiger girls basketball team came just one win away from earning another trip to the Class 6A state tournament. The Tigard boys hoop team also was one win away from a state tourney berth.
The Tigard track team boasted an individual state champion among other high placers at the Class 6A state meet. The Tigard girls tennis had the school's first-ever state tennis champion.
The Tigard girls soccer, volleyball, baseball and softball teams also earned state playoff berths.
And, as usual, the senior class at Tigard played a major role in that success.
Here's a brief look at some of the seniors, in addition to Times Athlete of the Year Lexie Sawin, who stepped up big for the Tigers the past school year.
Aksel Thorsfeldt was a ball-hawking defensive back for the Tigard football team, returning two interceptions for touchdowns during postseason play. He also soared to seventh place in the pole vault event at the Class 6A state track and field championships.
Kylie Warren was a four-year star for the Tigard girls basketball team, helping take the Tigers to the Class 6A state title game as a junior. She was a first-team All-Three Rivers League pick this past year.
Brock Klosterman was a hard-hitting fullback and linebacker for the Tigard football team, earning second-team Class 6A All-State honors on the defensive side of the ball. He was also a key player off the bench for the Tigard boys basketball team.
Sareena Patzke place in both the long jump and the 100-meter high hurdles at the Class 6A state track and field championships.
Jash Allen was a big-play running back for the Tigard football team, rushing for 1,478 yards and 27 touchdowns in his senior season.
Abby Portwood was a key player for both the Tigard girls soccer team and the Tigard girls basketball team.
Daniel Jones was a lockdown defender and a strong outside shooter for the Tigard boys basketball team. He also was a star midfielder for the Tiger boys lacrosse squad.
Ryan Minniti rushed for 1,024 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Tigard football squad, in addition to being one of the Tiger hard-hitters on defense from his outside linebacker spot.
Brett Thomas was a star pitcher and outfielder for the Tigard baseball team. He also played for the football squad.
Victoria Prouty soared to fourth place in the girls pole vault event at the Class 6A state track and field championships.
Elizabeth Soldwedel raced to fourth place in the 50-yard freestyle event at the Class 6A state swimming championships.
Jon Holzgang qualified for the Class 6A boys golf state tournament all four years at Tigard.
Parker Kuntz shined as a catcher for the Tigard baseball squad, earning first-team All-Three Rivers League honors. He also was a top wrestler for the Tigers.
Luke Smith ran the show for the Tigard boys basketball team from his point guard spot.
Rileigh Hidalgo was a first-team All-Three Rivers League pick during the volleyball season.
Alex Follett was a key lineman for the Tigard football team. He also played in singles competition for the Tigard boys tennis team.
