Horizon Christian gets win in eight-man football debut
The Horizon Christian High School football team made its debut in eight-man football a successful one.
The Hawks, starting fast and getting a key defensive stop at the end, opened their season by scoring a 28-26 win over Mohawk in a game played Friday at Mohawk High School.
Junior Luke Klein got Horizon Christian off to a fast start in the contest, intercepting a Mohawk pass and returning the ball 35 yards for a touchdown. Klein then ran in the two-point conversion, giving the Hawks a quick 8-0 lead.
Horizon Christian struck again in the first quarter. A 40-yard pass from senior quarterback Nathan Murrell to junior receiver Benny Tudorache set up a short Klein TD run, upping the lead to 14-0.
A Mohawk touchdown run trimmed the margin to 14-6.
Mohawk struck again in the second quarter, getting a long touchdown run. But Horizon Christian junior linebacker Josh Thompson stopped the two-point try, leaving the Hawks with a 14-12 advantage.
Horizon Christian then responded with a big play of its own. Murrell connected with Tudorache on a 50-yard touchdown pass play. A two-point pass from Murrell to Klein gave the Hawks a 22-12 lead.
Mohawk came back with a touchdown run and two-point conversion before halftime, making the score 22-20 at the intermission.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Hawks got a key defensive play early in the final stanza with another interception by Klein.
The turnover helped set up a 67-yard TD pass from Murrell to Tudorache. The two-point conversion pass failed, leaving Horizon Christian with a 28-20 lead.
Mohawk, in its ensuing possession, got a touchdown run. But the Hawks stopped the two-point conversion, giving them a 28-26 lead.
Then, after a Horizon Christian fumble, Mohawk drove the ball to the Horizon Christian 20-yard line as time was running out. Horizon junior Anthony Petit them came up with a fourth-down stop on defense, wrapping up the two-point victory for the Hawks.
Horizon Christian will be back in action Friday, it plays at Arlington/Condon in a game starting at 6 p.m.
