Bowmen take sixth at Sandy wrestling tournament
The Sherwood High School wrestling team, in its final regular-season match of the season, powered its way to sixth place in the team standings at the Robert Paul Invitational, held Saturday at Sandy High School.
The Bowmen took the No. 6 spot in the standings at the 15-school event with 111 points. Aloha finished in first place with a score of 218, and Canby was second at 160.
Junior Gaven Jolley led the way for Sherwood at the tournament, placing first in the 126-pound weight class. Jolley went 4-0 at the event, capping things off with a 13-3 major decision win over Aloha's Colton Fleming in the 126 title match.
Also for the Bowmen at the tournament, senior Jack Murphy was third at 126, sophomore Bram Nelson was third at 132, senior Andrew Mabry was third at 145, senior Jayden Cuthbertson was third at 285, sophomore Nick Hekker was fourth at 106, sophomore Nick Severson was fourth at 285, junior Jackson Barton was fifth at 220, sophomore Logan Swanson was sixth at 113, sophomore Philip Resch was sixth at 132 and freshman Bryan Cuthbertson was sixth at 220.
Prior to the tournament, Sherwood fell 46-17 to Newberg in a Three Rivers League dual match finale, held Jan. 24 at Newberg High School. With the loss, the Bowmen finished their league schedule with a 3-4 record. Newberg finished at 7-0.
Junior Kaden Rhinehart had the only fall for Sherwood at the match, as he pinned Dalton Paskett in a time of 52 seconds in the 170-pound match.
Jolley, at 132, scored a 14-4 major decision win over Jonah Worthington. Hekker got a 9-1 major decision win over Max Irving at 106 and Murphy posted a 9-3 decision win over Zach Irving at 126.
The Bowmen will next be in action when they compete at the Three Rivers League district tournament, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Tualatin High School.
