Police arrested a Salem man last week after he attempted to use the cold waters of the Pudding River as a means of escape.

Luis Daniel Hernandez, 22, of Salem, rolled his Chevrolet Impala at least two times in the 8000 block of Mount Angel Highway Northeast, destroying a tree, a mailbox and shrubbery in his MARION COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE - Marion County Sheriff's Office deputies pull a hit-and-run driver out of the Pudding River, where he fled after allegedly rolling his car, damaging property.

Hernandez fled the scene, but deputies with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office were able to catch up with him on Nusom Road Northeast near the Pudding River.

Hernandez ran from deputies and fell headfirst into the water. He refused to come out of the water for nearly an hour.

After Hernandez could no longer take the cold he surrendered to deputies. Hernandez was transported to Salem Hospital where he was treated for injuries he sustained during his motor vehicle crash.

Hernandez has been arrested and faces charges of failing to perform the duties of a driver - hit and run, interfering with a police officer, attempting to elude police and DUII.
