by: TYLER FRANCKE | WOODBURN INDEPENDENT - Elsa Bonham, a swim instructor and lifeguard at the Woodburn Aquatic Center, and 5-year-old Tristan Smith, of Tualatin, enjoy some time in the pool Friday morning.City representatives and members of the Woodburn Area Chamber of Commerce networking group, Greeters, gathered at the Woodburn Aquatic Center Friday morning for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of a $25,000 interior makeover.

Kristin Wierenga, program supervisor of the aquatic center, said the project included cleaning, repainting and recoloring the natatorium and locker rooms. The previous colors in these areas had been darker than they are now, and Wierenga said some patrons felt the old walls were in need of sprucing up.

“It’s a lot lighter. It feels cleaner,” she said. “Customers have mentioned that it’s refreshing.”

She said lifeguards have reported that the lighter wall colors even seem to lend an increased clarity and visibility to the pool water.

The painting of the natatorium took about one week to finish, with the work being done only during off-hours so as not to conflict with the pool’s regular schedule.

“The goal was not to close to the public,” she said. “It was important to us that these types of things do not negatively influence customers. We want them to still be able to use the center.”
