by: TYLER FRANCKE | WOODBURN INDEPENDENT - Annette Hemshorn, the Woodburn Pet Hospital's newest veterinarian, examines a patient last week. The Woodburn Pet Hospital’s newest veterinarian is a hometown native.

Dr. Annette Hemshorn was born and raised in Woodburn. She attended St. Luke School and graduated from Woodburn High School.

She attended Linfield College in McMinnville for her undergraduate education and went on to earn her doctorate in veterinary medicine from Washington State University in 2013.

She spent her first year as a working vet in Albany, before returning home for her new post, which started earlier this month.

“I had always wanted to come back,” she said. “I’ve been really looking forward to it.”

Hemshorn said she grew up wanting to be a veterinarian, though she admitted that the profession brings some unique challenges, especially as compared to the medical treatment of pets’ less furry counterparts.

“It’s a lot like human medicine, I?guess, except (the animals) can’t tell us what’s wrong,”?she said. “So that can definitely be challenging, but I’ve found it can be tremendously rewarding.”

Hemshorn said her favorite part of the job is being able to diagnose whatever might be afflicting a beloved household cat or dog, and hopefully, help get them well on the road to recovery.

“Pets are such a big part of people’s families now, and people want the best care they can get for them,”?she said. “It’s very satisfying when you can figure out what’s wrong with an animal, because you know you’re helping the owner, too.”

Since joining the staff of the Woodburn Pet Hospital, Hemshorn said she has been impressed by the quality of care the facility calls for and provides.

“There’s a very high standard for care here that I?really appreciate,”?she said.

She joins the hospital’s two existing veterinarians, Dr. Patrick Paradis, owner of the practice, and Dr. Elizabeth Nguyen.

“Everybody here is great to work with,” Hemshorn said of the hospital’s staff. “And I think I’ll get some really good mentorship from the other doctors.”
