The Wooden Shoe Tulip Fest, whose main feature is the 40 acres of tulips and daffodils at Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm, kicks off on Friday, March 24. The event, which draws in about 150,000 visitors each year, will last through April 30. Located at 33814 S. Meridian Road in Woodburn, the festival is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Barb Iverson, owner of Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm, says this year's festival will be a welcome sign of spring after a long winter.
"It's been a hard winter," Iverson said. "Around Oct. 1 it started raining, and I don't think we've had more than two or three days without rain since."
The farm boasts nearly 120 varieties of tulips and daffodils in a wide spectrum of colors, but the wet winter has meant the blooms will be a bit late this year. Iverson said that while there will be some flowers by the start of the festival, the fields won't be at their most colorful until mid-April. (For a field report with photos of current tulip growth, go here or to the farm's Facebook page.)
Each day of the festival, visitors can wander the tulip fields, go on a tram or hay wagon ride, utilize the children's play area with slides and tire swings, or go on a six-minute bumpy ride through the tulips on the cow train. There will be freshly picked tulips for purchase, flower displays to order for personal gardens, a selection of food from vendors like Mount Angel Sausage Company and a gift shop.
The newly remodeled Wooden Shoe Vineyards tasting room will be open with daily wine tastings near the tulip fields from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Visitors to the festival will also have access to the four-acre Wooden Shoe Event Garden for their own picnics — whether they've purchased food at the event or brought a meal from home.
On Saturdays and Sundays, there will be additional activities, including wooden shoe-making demonstrations, a crafter marketplace, an expanded play area, pony rides, jump tents, zip lines and paintball. Visitors aged 21 and over can also partake in the Wine Wagon Farm Tour on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
The farm also offers special events throughout the festival, including photography classes, live music and more. This year's special events include:
• Saturday, March 25: The Tulip Trail 5K/10K Run at 8:30 a.m. (proceeds go to the Oregon City Track department).
• Saturday evenings in April: Evenings at the Farm from 6-9 p.m.
