Leah Arriaga, 82, saw a man building a fence near her house off of Carl Road, so she asked how much he'd charge her to build 46 feet of fencing, a section of which had been blown down in a recent windstorm. After requiring the $1,300 for supply costs up front, the contractor knocked down the old fence and left. A GoFundMe page explained this hardship was aggravated because Arriaga couldn't let her dog out into the yard and hasn't been able to keep the neighbor dog out of the yard.

Arriaga said that because she had signed a contract with the man, police told her the only thing that could be done would be to pursue a civil suit.

The GoFundMe page was set up on Wednesday of last week and the goal amount of $550 was surpassed within a day.

On Saturday morning, a work party of about a dozen people banded together to raise the fence on Arriaga's property. Long Bros. Building Supply gave volunteers a discounted rate on materials, and Mega Foods donated food for the volunteers, which was cooked by volunteer Jane Fobert, said David Darnell, one of the lead volunteers. He said volunteers started around 10 a.m. and finished by 6 p.m.

"I couldn't believe it," Arriaga said. "They got the materials and worked so hard in the heat. They built my fence and it's just beautiful. It's so nice to know there are good people out there."
