Grant will help fund Woodburn organization's People's Representative leadership program

The Woodburn nonprofit CAPACES Leadership Institute was awarded a $20,000 grant from the Oregon Community Foundation to support its mission of developing leaders in communities of color.

The Oregon Community Foundation provides funding for philanthropic organizations and causes throughout the state of Oregon. According to a Dec. 14 press release, the foundation's board of directors approved more than $544,000 in grants to northern Willamette Valley nonprofits in November 2017.

"We are proud to partner with many extraordinary organizations to strengthen communities and improve life for all Oregonians," said Max Williams, president and CEO of the Oregon Community Foundation in the press release. "But we need to do more. In Oregon, many children of color and rural and low-income children don't have the same opportunities to learn and thrive as other children do — with life-long consequences."

CAPACES was the only Woodburn organization to receive an Oregon Community Foundation Community Grant in the foundation's fall 2017 grant cycle.

Statewide, the Oregon Community Foundation received more than 400 Community Grant applications for its fall 2017 grant cycle. The foundation approved 198 of those grants, totaling nearly $4 million, according to the Oregon Community Foundation website.

The CAPACES grant will help the organization implement its People's Representatives program, which aims to develop leaders in communities of color, particularly Latinos from low-income, farmworker and immigrant families in Marion and Polk counties.

2017 was the second consecutive year CAPACES received an Oregon Community Foundation grant for its People's Representative program. In fall 2016, CAPACES received a $25,000 grant for the program.
