Woodburn and North Marion will be represented at the middle school state championships

A pair of local middle school basketball teams are heading to Bend this weekend to participate in the 2014 Oregon Middle School Basketball Championship.

The Woodburn Junior Bulldogs’ sixth grade basketball team and the North Marion eighth grade boys team earned berths to the state tournament after excelling in several qualifying tournament in December and January.

The Bulldogs qualified after finishing second in the Silver Bracket of the Clackamas Fall Classic Dec. 8 and winning the Silver Bracket of the Sherwood Boys Winter Classic Dec. 15. Both tournaments carried automatic berths to the state tournament for the first and second place teams, allowing Woodburn to punch their tickets to the postseason.

The Huskies took the same route to the postseason, placing second in the eighth-grade Silver Bracket at the Clackamas tournament and winning the Silver Bracket of the Sherwood tournament. North Marion also placed second in the Silver Bracket of the Wilsonville Winter Classic on Jan. 12.

The Bulldogs join 14 other teams that are divided into four pools of the 6th Grade Boys Silver bracket. Woodburn’s pool contains Tualatin, La Pine and Putnam. Each team is guaranteed at least four games, and the top team from each pool advances to the semifinals, which will be played Sunday.

Woodburn opens the tournament Saturday at 2:15 p.m. against Tualatin and will play either La Pine or Putnam in their second game, depending on the results from each contest.

Meanwhile, North Marion joins a field of 24 teams divided into eight pools. The Huskies similarly must win their pool – which contains teams from Ridgeview and Wilson – to advance to the quarterfinals against the other pool champions.

North Marion will open the tournament against Ridgeview at 3:30 p.m. and play Wilson at 8:30 p.m.
