Eve Castro replaces girls soccer coach Carlos Menezes, who moves over to the Bulldogs' cross country program

The Woodburn High School athletics department has announced two head coaching changes for the upcoming fall.

First of all, longtime girls soccer coach Carlos Menezes will make the switch to head up the cross country team, replacing Tom Lonergan, who coached the team last season on an interim basis.

That left a hole on the girls soccer club, which will be filled by Everardo “Eve” (pronounced “Ev-ay”) Castro. A fixture in the area’s soccer scene for nearly 20 years, two of Castro’s daughters will be on this year’s squad: senior Alyssa and first-year Madison.

Ironically, it’s a job Castro applied for — unsuccessfully — about 13 years ago.

“It took a while, but I’m back,” he said.

Castro has a long and expansive coaching resume, including stints at Valor Middle School, North Marion High School, Canby High School and Gervais High School, working with both boys and girls programs. He’s also been active in the Woodburn club soccer scene for more than 10 years.

Castro said his style focuses on ball control and conditioning. In club seasons, he takes pride in his teams of 11 or 12 players being able to outrun squads twice that size.

“We’re not going to be a very tall team this year, so we’ll just have to run the other teams into the ground,” Castro said with a laugh.

He said his club experience will be a big plus in his new post, as he’s already worked with many of the girls in that capacity.

“This year’s freshmen — I’ve been coaching them four or five years,” he said. “They’re going to know my program really well.”

His outlook is optimistic heading into the 2014 season, given that the Bulldogs are bringing back all but two of their starters from last year’s squad.

“We’re going to look really good,” Castro said. “I’m just excited for the season to start. I think we can do better than last year.”
