Boys basketball: Gervais boys fall in Vernonia tourney
The Gervais boys basketball team fell in back-to-back games at the Vernonia Tournament to open the 2017-18 season.
The Cougars began the season against the hosting Loggers on Friday night, falling 91-52 despite a 25-point performance from junior Pedro Villegas.
Villegas led the team with 25 points, including six 3-pointers, but Gervais had little answer on defense for the Vernonia duo of Jakob Handegar and Cay Sullivan, who combined for 53 points.
Gervais followed on Friday in the consolation game against Riverdale, falling 60-29.
After falling behind 15-4 in the first quarter against the Mavericks, Gervais showed life in the second period, outscoring Riverdale 11-9 to head into the half down 26-15.
But the Gervais offense stalled in the second half, and the Mavericks pulled away for the 31-point victory.
Villegas and fellow junior Elvis Vallejo led the Cougars with seven points each, followed by Alexander Kalugin, who had six.
Gervais (0-2) hosts the St. Paul Buckaroos (1-1) on Wednesday in its home opener before finishing out the week at Sheridan (0-2) on Friday.
