Cougars break 11-game losing streak and pick up their first league win with a 67-62 win over the Colton Vikings

PHIL HAWKINS - Gervais junior Pedro Villegas averaged 24.0 points in a pair of games against the Colton Vikings and Blanchet Catholic Cavaliers last week.The Gervais boys basketball team snapped an 11-game losing streak last week after defeating the Colton Vikings 67-62 on Jan. 16 behind the hot shooting of juniors Pedro Villegas (above) and Elvis Vallejo (right), along with teammate Nikola Zharkoff.

The trio combined to score 57 points, Villegas leading the way with a game-high 22, followed by 20 from Vallejo and 15 from Zharkoff. The win also snapped a 10-game skid against league opponents dating back to last season, giving Gervais (2-15, 1-5 PacWest) its first league win of the season.

Villegas' hot streak continued on Friday against Blanchet, connecting on six 3-pointers en route to a 26-point game, but the Cougars went on to fall 67-51 to the No. 5 Cavaliers.
