Track and field: North Marion tunes up at home before state qualifier
The North Marion track and field team played host to the league rival Stayton in its final event of the regular season last week.
The Huskies welcomed the Eagles along with athletes from the Oregon School for the Deaf and Willamette Valley Christian on May 1 in a warm-up before the state qualifying meet this week at Newport High School.
Neither Oregon West Conference team was at full strength, but North Marion still managed to lead the way with a handful of strong performances from both the boys and girls teams.
Senior sprinter Felipe Ortega was one of two North Marion boys to win multiple times on the day, sweeping the short distance events with a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash in 12.10, followed by a victory in the 200 in 24.05.
Freshman Gavin Hurst won for the first time this season in the 1,500 with a time of 5:12.24.
In the field events, Ortega was matched by junior teammate Jarrett Adair, who took home his first victory in the long jump this season with a mark of 17-06, followed by a winning the triple jump with a mark of 35-08 in his first official attempt in the event.
Adair added a second-place finish in the high jump with a clearance of 5-04 for good measure.
On the girls side, the Huskies swept the short distance events, with freshman Hailey Welch taking the 100 in 14.93, followed by a pair of victories by fellow first-year athlete Danielle Christenson in the 200 (30.78) and 400 (1:13.04) — both personal records. Christenson added a PR in the 100 by finishing behind Welch in 15.21, while Welch had a PR of her own in the 200 by finishing runner up to Christenson in 31.40.
In the field events, junior Emma Morcom set a new personal best in the discus with a first-place throw of 87-04.
The Huskies turn their attention now to the Oregon West Conference Championships, held Friday and Saturday and Newport High School. The top qualifiers from the district meet will advance to the 4A State Championships at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field on May 18-19.
