He received the award for his young adult novel Martin Marten, only the second work of fiction to receive the medal in its 90-year history.  His new novel, The Adventures of John Carson in Several Quarters of the World, has just been published to rave reviews.

SUBMITTED PHOTO: KATE SZROM - Lauren Weedman, who took the city by storm with The Peoples Republic of Portland, is back once again for the world premiere of her first music-based production Lauren Weedman Doesnt Live Here Anymore. Weedman's current obsessions include love and heartbreak; big hair and tight jeans; Loretta Lynn and John Prince; or songs she thinks make her look skinny and appropriately tragic. The hilarious and versatile Lauren Weedman knows a thing of two about love gone wrong. Shes ready to sing her heart out about it and tell you a few tall tales too. Lauren Weedman Doesnt Live Here Anymore was commissioned by Portland Center Stage at The Armory, and workshopped at the companys annual festival of new works, JAW: A Playwrights Festival. The production will run on The Armorys U.S. Band Main Stage in conjunction with another music-based world premiere, Wild and Reckless, written and performed by Blitzen Trapper. The Armorys Associate Artistic Director Rose Riordan will direct the production. Tim Sonnefeld will provide music direction and join Weedman on stage to play guitar, along with Ji Tanzer on drums. Join artist and educator Jason Graham — a slam poetry champion and speaker who performs hip hop as MOsley WOtta — for a conversation exploring the relationship between self-expression and vulnerability. Clackamas Community College will host What We Risk from 1-2:30 p.m. March 18 in Roger Rook, Room 200 on the Oregon City campus, 19600 Molalla Ave. Graham is a Chicago-born, Oregon-based artist and educator and is currently an art ambassador for Rise Up International. He has been a TEDx speaker and performer and has shared the stage with Ghostface Killah, Saul Williams and Talib Kweli. Most recently, Graham was a journalist for Vice magazine in Nauru, an island country in Micronesia. This free event is an Oregon Humanities 2016-17 Conversation project. Scott plays a variety of instruments including cornet, mandolin, guitar and keyboard, and has been a composer, producer and leader of musical ensembles for more than 25 years. He has composed scores for more than 40 Public Broadcast System documentaries and films in visitor centers in national parks. He also records and performs with Irish fiddler Kevin Burke. SUBMITTED PHOTO - Stumptown Stages recently was awarded the Yolanda D. King Award. Yolanda Denise King was the oldest child of Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King.  The award goes to an artist who, through her or his work, embodies the messages of the King family and Rosa Parks. Yolanda D. King, who died in 2007 at age 51, was an actress and motivational speaker who promoted racial harmony. The awardees must bring people of all walks of life together with the power of their talent and create a unique harmony and unity.
