2017 Ford F-150 Raptor is completely over the top
Every once in a while, you find a vehicle that is simply over the top. The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor is just such a vehicle. But if you're looking for the ultimate in a fast, off-road, and general-purpose four-wheel-drive truck, Ford has it.
The Ford F-150 is the best-selling vehicle in America, and the Raptor is the halo model Ford has always wanted. Not only is the Raptor crazy fast, it's up-to-date with Ford's EcoBoost 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. The Raptor steps up with 450 horsepower and a whopping 510 pound-feet of torque. That power is available to all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The result is a big brick of a pickup that will hit 60 MPH in about 6 seconds, and turn an honest 14-second quarter-mile. But that's not all — the Raptor is also a capable four-wheel-drive truck with Fox racing shocks, beefed up suspension, and underbody skid plate armor for off-road use. You can shift into 4WD on the fly, and the Raptor comes with six 4X4 driving modes for conditions like street, sand, mud, and even a special "Baja" setting.
But Ford isn't even finished with the Raptor's capabilities — you can also tow up to 8,000 pounds because the tow package is included with the Raptor. The truck comes with an integrated trailer brake controller on the dash, and the blind spot monitoring system includes the area next to your trailer when you're towing. Throw in the 360-degree surround-view camera and the rear-view camera for backing up to the trailer, and Ford's "Pro Backup Assist" for reversing with a trailer, and you've got a tow vehicle that can go rescue your ATVs when they get stuck.
For all of its off-road toughness, the Raptor is also comfortable inside, with every modern convenience. Heated leather upholstery, the SYNC3 infotainment system, and all the usual luxury features are there.
The Raptor comes with a full crew cab, plus a 5.5-foot truck bed with a spray-in bed liner and special tie-down and bed divider accessories. One feature worth mentioning is the bed step integrated into the tailgate. Like any serious off-road vehicle, the Raptor sits up high, so there's a step and handhold worked into the tailgate to help you climb up. The Raptor also comes with running boards to help you up into the cab.
The bottom line on the Raptor is that if you are looking for a truck you can drive every day, go to the drag races, tow your trailer, and run in the Baja 1000, this is it. The price tag starts at $50,560, which isn't cheap, but if this is what you want, there's not a better deal out there.
