In the last seven years, Volvo has spent more than $11 billion on research and development for new vehicles. We've seen the results of that investment in a series of award-winning vehicles like the XC90 SUV, S90 sedan, and the V90 wagon. Now that investment is paying off in the mid-size segment, as Volvo launches its all-new 2018 XC60.
The XC60 is Volvo's best-selling model, competing in the premium mid-size SUV category. That's a tough league with offerings from Audi, Mercedes, and BMW all contending for your business. But when it comes to the unique needs of Portland drivers, the Volvo XC60 offers the right set of features.
Volvo is known for their commitment to safety. The company's stated goal is that by 2020 no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo product. The new XC60 takes some big steps towards that goal. Among the standard features on all new XC60 models is a collision avoidance system that will help you steer the XC60 away from an impact at speeds up to 37 MPH. Steering assistance has been added to Volvo's City Safety system that mitigates impacts with pedestrians, bicyclists, and large animals from 31-62 MPH.
Volvo also added oncoming lane mitigation. If you stray into an oncoming lane, the XC60 will take you back to the correct lane at speeds up to 87 MPH. Optional safety equipment includes Volvo's blind spot monitor that will also help steer you to safety in the event of a potential collision in your blind spot.
The XC60 will be available with three versions of the 2.0-liter Drive-E engine. The T5 is rated at 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The T6 is 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Later this year, the T8 hybrid will join the fleet with 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. All XC60 models use an 8-speed automatic transmission and all are equipped with All-Wheel-Drive.
Inside, Volvo has really stepped up the luxury. All models come with heated leather upholstery and a nine-inch touch screen interface that responds to tablet-style gestures. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smart phone integration is included as well as Volvo's Sensus Connect system. All internal surfaces are made of high-quality materials and the XC60 is extremely comfortable in all seating positions.
On the road, the XC60 is whisper-quiet and surprisingly fast. With the T5 engine you'll get a zero-to-sixty time of 6.4 seconds. The T6 will get you to 60 in 5.6 seconds, and the T8 hybrid will do it in just 4.9 seconds. Handling is sure and steady, as are the brakes. With this new XC60, Volvo has taken the lead among European SUV manufacturers.
