The new Sierra is larger than the outgoing model in every dimension, offering more room in the cab, in the bed, and a higher seating position.

PORTLAND TRIBUNE: JEFF ZURSCHMEIDE - Both 6.2-liter and 5.3-liter V8 engines are available in the new Sierra, along with GM's new 10-speed automatic transmission in 4x2 and 4x4 configurations. GMC has unveiled the revised Sierra light-duty pickup truck for the 2019 model year. The new pickup will be available with a number of high-tech features designed to keep the Sierra in its premium market position.

"Sierra is the foundation of GMC's Professional Grade identity," said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global GMC. "GMC ignited the premium truck segment 17 years ago with the original launch of the Sierra Denali, and the next generation Sierra Denali establishes a new benchmark in capability and refinement."

The new Sierra is larger than the outgoing model in every dimension, offering more room in the cab, in the bed, and a higher seating position. Crew cab models will offer three inches of additional legroom compared to the 2018 model.

PORTLAND TRIBUNE: JEFF ZURSCHMEIDE - Tech features in the Sierra include a multi-color head-up display that projects important information onto the windshield, a camera-based rear view mirror that functions even when a cap or camper is installed, and surround-view cameras for reversing. The trucks shown in Detroit were the mid-level SLT trim and top Denali trim. Together, these trims account for 75 percent of current Sierra sales. In these trims, the Sierra will include several standard or optional features that are new to GMC, such as the new ProGrade trailering system.

The trailering system offers a pre-departure checklist, maintenance reminders, trailer light tests with reports, trailer electrical diagnostics and trailer tire pressure and temperature monitoring, all accessed through the main infotainment screen in the cab. Hitch view, side view, and remote trailer cameras are also supported.

Later in the 2019 model year, the Sierra Denali will be available with an industry-first bed made of forged carbon fiber. The carbon unit replaces the standard steel inner panels and bed floor with a lightweight composite for unmatched dent, scratch and corrosion resistance. The new CarbonPro box is also 62 pounds lighter than the same size bed made from steel.

PORTLAND TRIBUNE: JEFF ZURSCHMEIDE - The Sierra will also offer a new multi-function tailgate, which doubles as a step up into the bed. The Sierra will also offer a new multi-function tailgate, which includes features like a flip-up load stopping flap that effectively creates an 8-foot bed, or a working-height desk surface, or easy loading hatch. The MultiPro tailgate also doubles as a step up into the bed.

Additional tech features in the Sierra include a multi-color head-up display that projects important information onto the windshield, a camera-based rear view mirror that functions even when a cap or camper is installed, and surround-view cameras for reversing.

Pricing has not been released for the 2019 Sierra line, but the new model is expected to be on sale this fall. Both 6.2-liter and 5.3-liter V8 engines are available, along with GM's new 10-speed automatic transmission in 4x2 and 4x4 configurations.
