Metzger Park to hold National Night Out Celebration on Aug. 4
- The Times - News
A National Night Out celebration will be held at Metzger Community Park on Tuesday, Aug. 4. The celebration will take place at 8400 S.W. Hemlock St., near the corner of Hall Boulevard and Hemlock Street, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Participants will have the chance to inspect fire trucks, police cars and water department vehicles, and 'McGruff the Crime Dog' will make an appearance. Complimentary refreshments, including ice cream, cookies, coffee and punch will be served. In addition, Washington County staff and the Metzger Park Board will be there to welcome those in attendance.
Tigard police are encouraging neighbors across the city to organize celebrations or block parties for National Night Out 2009 on Aug. 4.
'Neighbors working together is quite powerful,' said Tigard Police spokesman Jim Wolf. 'Collaborate with your neighbors, because they're your best security element.'
The idea is to 'give crime and drugs a going-away party' - to bring people together to get to know each other, discuss issues and find solutions.
Residents can register their neighborhood celebrations online at www.tigard-or.gov/police. Pre-registered neighborhoods can pick up complimentary party packs from Target and expect to receive visits from police and fire personnel during the event.
The police department will kick off National Night Out with a mini community and safety awareness fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Target on Hall Boulevard.
Across America, 33 million people in more than 10,000 communities are expected to participate in the event this year. The 2009 event marks the seventh in Tigard.
