Competition offers scholarships

The Voice of Democracy competition offers high school students the opportunity to write and record a broadcast script based on a patriotic theme. Students who enter the competition have a chance at winning a share of more than $2.3 million in college scholarships and incentives.

The theme for this year’s competition is “Why I’m optimistic about our nation’s future.” The deadline for submissions is Nov. 1. Contact Sandie Yamauchi at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to receive an entry form.

Schools to release early on Sept. 25

The first professional growth date for teachers for the 2013-14 school year will be Sept. 25. All students in West Linn-Wilsonville schools will be released early on that day. Professional growth dates occur each month. Check with the office at your child’s school for the exact release time and for information about early-release bus routes.

PSAT and ACT EXPLORE test dates set

West Linn High School will administer the PSAT on Oct. 16 starting at 8:30 a.m. to all sophomores. College-bound juniors are encouraged to take the test also, as it is the qualifying test for National Merit recognition and a good opportunity to practice for the SAT. Sophomores are registered for the test automatically, as it is mandated and funded by the state. Juniors must register and pay $18 to the school bookkeeper before the test.

Also on Oct. 16, all freshmen will take the ACT EXPLORE assessment. It prepares students for their high school coursework and helps them begin to think about their post-high school choices.

School will end at approximately noon on the testing day. All seniors and juniors not registered to take the PSAT will not attend school on Oct. 16 and will not be permitted on campus during testing. Robinson Crusoe’ comes to RRMS

Missoula Children’s Theatre will be at Rosemont Ridge Middle School the week of Sept. 30 through Oct. 5 to stage a production of “Robinson Crusoe” with a cast of local student actors. MCT will bring a set, lights, costumes, props and makeup and will work with assistant directors and cast members pulled from Cedaroak Park, Trillium Creek, Three Rivers and Rosemont Ridge schools. Starting on Sept. 13, registration forms will be available at those schools for students interested in participating in the production.

Registrations are due between Sept. 16 and 20. Roles are limited, and turning registration in early improves students’ chances of being invited to audition.

Rehearsals for the production will be held Sept. 30 through Oct. 4, from 4 to 8:30 p.m. and on Oct. 5 for much of the day; times will vary depending on the role. Performances will be held on Oct. 5 at 3 and 5:30 p.m. at Rosemont Ridge Middle School.
