by: REVIEW PHOTO: VERN UYETAKE - A deadly two-car crash closed Highway 43 between Lake Oswego and the Sellwood Bridge Tuesday afternoon.A Vancouver, Wash., man died in a Tuesday afternoon traffic crash south of the Sellwood Bridge.

The head-on crash happened shortly after 3 p.m. on Highway 43 at Southwest Radcliffe Road, and Highway 43 was closed in both directions during the evening commute as emergency responders worked at the scene.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday identified the deceased as George Schaefer, 73, of Vancouver.

A preliminary investigation found Schaefer was driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser southbound on Highway 43 when he crossed over the center line and struck a Dodge Ram 2500 pickup pulling a trailer in the opposite direction.

Schaefer was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the sheriff's office.

The pickup's driver, 28-year-old Corey Winkle of Troutdale, and passenger Christopher Hicks, a Vancouver resident whose age wasn't provided, were taken to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The wreck remains under investigation by the East County Vehicular Crimes Team. Lake Oswego Fire Department personnel and Lake Oswego police also responded to the crash.

According to KOIN 6 News, the Lake Oswego Review's news partner, TriMet bus lines 35 and 36 stopped serving stops on Highway 43 between Taylor's Ferry Road in Southwest Portland and Terwilliger Boulevard near Lake Oswego following the crash; service restarted around 8 p.m.

Highway 43 remained shut down to other motorized travel between the Sellwood Bridge and Lake Oswego until shortly before 8 p.m.
