After ousting Reynolds, West Linn shuts down Tigard in single elimination

by: DAN BROOD - West Linn shortstop Tim Tawa makes a tag in the Lions' OIBA playoff win over Tigard. After easily dispatching Reynolds in a best-of-three series to reach the OIBA playoff tournament, the Lions won the first round of single-elimination play with a 3-1 victory over Tigard Tuesday.

Reynolds had given West Linn some problems this summer. Heading into the three-game series, the Raiders were one of the rare teams to have recorded a win against the Lions this summer.

Reynolds also won the series opener 8-7, putting West Linn on the brink of elimination before the playoffs even really began.

However, the Lions rallied with a 14-2 rout and then an 8-4 victory in the rubber match to advance.

Against Tigard, West Linn fell behind early, allowing an unearned run in the top of the first. However, southpaw Jordan Dailey wouldn't give up another run in the contest, hurling a complete game to keep his stellar summer going.

West Linn would tie the game in the bottom of the third when Tim Tawa knocked a two-out double to score Tate Hoffman.

In the next inning, Nicholas Yokubaitis hit a double to the fence and would then score on an infield single by Colton Cosner for what would prove to be the winning run.

An RBI groundout by Parker Hoffman would give West Linn some added insurance. However, West Linn wouldn't need it as Dailey went the distance for the Lions, backed by strong defense.

The Lions moved on to face either Sherwood or Lakeridge in the second round of the tournament.
