West Linn's Patti O'Mara went down swinging in the 34th annual Oregon Senior Amateur at The Oregon Golf Club on June 22-24.
O'Mara finished just 10th after the 18-hole stroke play round on June 22, shooting a 17-over-par 79, while the day's medalists, Charisse Spada and Loree McKay, both shot 80.
Undeterred, O'Mara came back on June 23 to beat seventh-seeded Rise Alexander of Oregon City 1-up in the first round of match play.
In the quarterfinal round of match play on June 24, O'Mara bounced second-seeded Anita Wicks of Roseburg 2 and 1. And on June 25, O'Mara did it again, beating 11th-seeded Mary Jacobs of Portland 2 and 1 to reach the finals later in the day.
Then, facing Portland's Lara Tennant in her second 18-hole round of the day in the sweltering heat at OGC, O'Mara jumped out to an early lead, winning the par-5 first hole with a bogey, but Tenant responded by winning the sixth and seventh holes to take a 1-up lead of her own.
O'Mara came back with a birdie on the par-3 eighth hole and the pair halved the ninth hole to enter the back nine with Tenant 1-up. In the closest match of the day, Tenant won the par-4 10th hole to move to 2-up.
The pair halved holes 11 through 13 before Tenant moved to 3-up with a par on the 14th. O'Mara won the 15th with a par, but Tenant had the last word, winning the 16th with a par to win the match 3 and 2.
The win was Tenant's first Oregon Senior Amateur title.
