West Linn boys battle to second in TRL opener; girls win Tuesday
The 2018 Three Rivers League boys golf opener was wild, hard-fought, competitive and — weirdest of all — sunny.
By the time the first round of TRL play — held Monday, March 19, at Chehalem Glenn Golf Course in Newberg — ended, Tigard had walked off with the victory at 317 strokes, followed in the day's team standings by West Linn at 326, Tualatin with a 338, Lake Oswego at 339, Lakeridge and Sherwood each with 341, Canby at 369 and Newberg with a 391.
In the individual standings, Sherwood's Mason Bonn notched a 1-over par 73 to beat the 75s posted by Tigard's Abel Rodriguez and Canby's Sam Krauss.
As important as those final scores were, however, the Lions also walked away with newfound knowledge about what their team might look like in the evolving Three Rivers League season.
West Linn was led Monday by sophomore Jackson Forsyth, who shot a 7-over-par 79 — good for an eighth-place tie — notching one birdie on each side along the way.
The Lions also saw junior Hunter Johnson come through with an 81, followed by junior Sebastian Hardin's 82 and an 84 by senior Jorgen Stauffer.
The West Linn girls were tough as nails in their Tuesday opener at Chehalem Glenn, shooting 330 to beat runner-up Lake Oswego's 356 by 26 strokes.
The rest of the team scoring included Lakeridge at 365, St. Mary's with a 375, Tigard at 432, Sherwood with a 437, Tualatin at 453 and Newberg with a 510. Canby's team was incomplete.
The Lions were led Monday by sophomore Olivia Venderby's 5-over-par 77 — she was second overall — followed by senior Avery Gill's 83, 85s from both senior Katie Williams and freshman Sydney Marshall, and an 88 by sophomore Brady Turnquist.
Tigard's Victoria Gailey — the reigning TRL medalist — won the event with a 72.
The Lion boys return to action after spring break with a tournament at Willamette Valley Country Club in Canby at 1 p.m. April 2, while the girls teams play at Oswego Lake Country Club at 1 p.m. April 2.
