West Linn girls win it all at district golf
The Lions brought home the gold.
The West Linn girls golf team, which previously won five straight tournaments during the Three Rivers League regular season, capped its 2018 run with another spectacular performance at district.
The Lions, facing the TRL's best in back-to-back 18-hole tournaments at Stone Creek Golf Course in Oregon City on Monday and Tuesday, just kept on winning at district, shooting 313 on Monday to beat Lake Oswego by 29 shots, and coming back on Tuesday with a 308 to again beat the runner-up Lakers, who finished Tuesday's around at 336.
"I was super impressed with how we played," said West Linn coach Bob Turnquist. "We definitely dominated the league all year and played very solid so it was a very good performance."
In Monday's round, the Lions landed three of their four varsity scorers in the 70s, that group led by sophomore Olivia Venderby's 4-over-par 76 — the third-best round of the day behind Tigard's Victoria Gailey at 72 and St. Mary's Alex Tomita with a 74.
Joining Venderby in the 70s were senior Avery Gill with a 77 and sophomore Brady Turnquist at 79. Freshman Sydney Marshall added her team's fourth score with an 81, while senior Katie Williams finished at 87.
"I saw a lot of positive things," Bob Turnquist said. "Brady ended up shooting 79, so to have a kid that's kind of struggled who then steps up at the district tournament was great."
The complete team scoring from Monday was: West Linn 313, Lake Oswego 342, St. Mary's 348, Tigard 380, Sherwood 393, Canby 449, Newberg 429, Tualatin 455 and Lakeridge inc.
The Lions were even better on Tuesday, again landing three players in the 70s and finishing at 308 to win easily. Venderby led the way again — this time with a 3-over-par 75 — but she had even more help this time. Williams rebounded from her tough first day to tie Venderby at 75 — the third-best round of the day — followed by Brady Turnquist's 76, Marshall's 82 and an 84 from Gill.
"Katie Williams shot 75 (and) Sydney Marshall played great today — it was a very solid performance," Bob Turnquist said. "Olivia Venderby played unbelievable. I think it was a little lower than what she expected, and I love that competitive side of her, but it's about the team win and we were excited to win."
The complete team scoring from Monday was: West Linn 308, Lake Oswego 336, Tigard 361, St. Mary's 361, Sherwood 399, Tualatin 416, Canby 430, Newberg 448 and Lakeridge inc.
Gailey capped her run as Three Rivers League medalist by winning again on Tuesday with a 2-under-par 70, while Lake Oswego's Tya Seth placed second with a 74.
In the season-long team scoring race, West Linn finished first with 112 points, followed by Lake Oswego at 98, St. Mary's at 80, Tigard at 70, Sherwood at 54, Tualatin at 40, Canby at 24, Newberg at 20 and Lakeridge at zero.
With their success at district, the Lions earned the TRL's automatic berth to the 2018 Class 6A state tournament, set for May 14-15 at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.
Meanwhile, Lake Oswego, St. Mary's and Tigard will all play in the regional tournament at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn at noon Monday, facing the second-, third- and fourth-place teams from the Mt. Hood Conference with the top two finishers earning team berths to state.
West Linn's success at district also sealed the Lions' places on the TRL all-league teams, with Venderby earning a spot on the first team, while Williams, Gill, Turnquist and Marshall all won second-team berths.
