West Linn sophomore Logan Thompson reaches district tennis final
While the final story of the 2018 Three Rivers League district tennis tournament has yet to be written — the tournament finishes on Wednesday after The Tidings' press deadline — the West Linn tennis teams definitely made their presences felt.
In boys play — the tournament was held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at Portland Tennis Center — third-seeded Lion sophomore Logan Thompson battled all the way into Wednesday's boys singles championship against top-seeded Lakeridge junior Jack Ninteman.
Thompson got there by beating Lake Oswego's Colton Lowry 7-6 (7), 7-6, Newberg's Spencer Lanier 6-2, 6-1, Lake Oswego's Connor Whittington 6-0, 7-6 in the quarterfinals and Lake Oswego's second-seeded Gabe Horwitz 6-0, 6-4 in the semifinals.
Lion junior Harry Winsper and sophomore teammate Aidan Showalter both played their way into the tournament quarterfinals, with Winsper falling 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 to Tualatin's Will Havenar and Showalter dropping his quarterfinal to Horwitz 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles play, second-seeded senior Justin Lawrence and junior Grant Grainger played their way into the tournament semifinals before falling to Lakeridge's Erik Svoboda and Andrew Slominski 6-3, 6-4.
The Lions also saw the teams of junior Thomas Lesser and sophomore Nick Robinson, and seniors Ben Walker and Alex Houlette reach the tournament quarterfinals.
Girls district tournament
In girls play, the Lions saw singles players Gretel Rajamoney, Theresa Li and Hannah Vedder advance to the tournament's second round.
Doubles play followed a similar arc for the Lions, with the following teams reaching the second round — Ella Gulbrandson and Mikayla Vincent, Alyx Burkhartzmeyer and Vera Youga, and Montana Walsh and Sydney Sovde.
Complete tournament coverage will appear in next week's edition of The Tidings.
