Cafe to host Coffee Creek quilt exhibit

Quilters work with inmates at Oregons only womens prison

Quilts crafted by women incarcerated at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility will be on display throughout the month of August at The Place to Be Cafe in Canby.

Quilts made by instructors with Coffee Creek Quilters, a local group of volunteers that works with inmates, will also be exhibited and offered for sale.

The Place to Be Cafe is dedicating Aug. 4 as a special fundraising event for Coffee Creek Quilters. On that day, The Place to Be Cafe will donate 25 percent of sales to Coffee Creek Quilters. The cafe will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Coffee Creek Quilters teach classes at Oregon’s only women’s prison. Each student in the program makes three quilts in weekly two-hour classes. The first two quilts are donated to a variety of organizations that serve seniors in nursing homes, hospitalized children, terminally ill adults and foster children.

Each year about 150 quilts are donated to these organizations. Students may keep the third quilt or give it to a loved one.

This exhibit is part of The Place to Be Café’s Mission Possible initiative to support local nonprofits. The cafe is located at 190 NW Second Ave, Canby. It is open Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
