Oregon City library to digitize pre-1922 local newspapers

The Oregon City Public Library will use a federal grant to create digital images of the city’s historic newspapers.

The $22,000 grant that Oregon City received from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act will be used for the project “Early Oregon Voices: Digitizing Historic Oregon City Newspapers.”

Oregon City’s library will digitize the early Oregon newspapers published from Territorial Days through 1922.

The digital newspaper content will be placed online for free public access and keyword searching on oregonnews.uoregon.edu.

“This project will provide access to the rich source of early Oregon history and genealogy provided by these newspapers,” Library Director Maureen Cole said. “The Oregon City newspaper content will be of interest to historians, museum staff, librarians, genealogists, educators and students, governmental officials and departments and many other interested parties.”

Preparation and digitization of the newspapers will be done by the Oregon Digital Newspaper Program at the University of Oregon.

Under federal legislation, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, through the Library Services and Technology Act of 2003, provides funds to libraries using a population-based formula. State libraries may use the appropriation to support statewide initiatives and services; they also may distribute the funds through subgrant competitions or cooperative agreements to public, academic, research, school and special libraries. Federal funds primarily support activities using technology for information sharing between libraries and other community services. It also funds programs making library resources more accessible to urban, rural or low-income residents, or others who have difficulty using library services.
