$25,000 offered annually to local individuals, programs

by: PORTLAND REIGN PHOTOGRAPHY - More than 30 students at Boones Ferry Primary School have participated in Chess for Success for the past two years. This Rotary program received funding last year from the Community Services Opportunity Grant program. The city of Wilsonville will offer $25,000 through the Community Services Opportunity Grant program to assist organizations and individuals in producing programs, projects or services that further educational, art or community leadership; encourage and promote diversity; foster advances in education, art or community leadership; or involve young people or the elderly in community activities.

The $25,000 is available each year with two deadlines, Sept. 27, 2013, and March 7, 2014. A total of $10,000 is available at each deadline with $5,000 available for smaller, time-sensitive applications. The Wilsonville Parks and Recreation Advisory Board selects grant recipients and awards the funds.

“This continues to be a very popular opportunity for nonprofits and individuals to further enhance their program, project or service to the community,” said Mayor Tim Knapp. “The city council believes that the Community Services Opportunity Grant program contributes significantly to making Wilsonville a great place to live, work and recreate.”

Over the years, funds from this grant have assisted with a summer interactive reading and science program for up to 180 low-income Wilsonville youth; help purchase commercial tents and canopy’s for local events; and paid for maps, posters, fliers and other materials used to promote the public sculpture program in Wilsonville.

Last year’s recipients included Willie Fit, Lowrie Primary PTA, Wilsonville Robotics, Rotary Chess for Success and the Wilsonville Theatre Company.
