Study results shared on services along I-5 corridor

South Metro Area Regional Transit (SMART) is hosting an online open house through Oct. 25 at for public review and comment on draft needs assessments and potential plans to improve transit services in the Wilsonville to Portland I-5 corridor.

Operated by the city of Wilsonville, SMART is studying ways to provide better transit services at lower cost from Wilsonville to Portland. Funded by a grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation, the SMART Transit Integration Project is specifically looking at:

  • Integrating fixed-route services for commuters and door-to-door services for the elderly and individuals with a disability.n Modifying route 2X service, potentially terminating the line closer to Wilsonville than the current terminus at the Barbur Transit Center in Southwest Portland, but with improved connections to TriMet services and/or frequency.
  • Extending the 2X route further north directly to downtown Portland.
  • Before moving into the next phase, SMART is seeking additional public input on potential integration and service strategies. An online open house provides interested citizens with:

  • Summary of results from the needs assessment phase of the project.
  • Identification of key challenges and potential strategies to overcome obstacles.
  • Opportunities to comment on the feasibility of potential strategies and identify other approaches to be assessed.
  • As part of the project’s first phase, SMART conducted stakeholder interviews, group presentations and three surveys, including an online community survey and surveys of riders on SMART Route 2X and TriMet Line 96.

SMART currently provides scheduled, fixed-route and demand-responsive service (dial-a-ride) within Wilsonville, and scheduled service between Wilsonville and Canby, Salem and Portland. SMART’s Route 2X currently provides service to/from SMART Central at Wilsonville Station to the Barbur Transit Center in Southwest Portland. SMART also provides seniors and persons with disabilities with door-to-door service for medical trips outside of Wilsonville.
