Man killed in I-5 accident outside of Wilsonville

Drive rear-ended, crushed by commercial truck

A fatal traffic accident occurred Nov. 4 during the evening commute on Interstate 5 just outside of Wilsonville.

At about 5 p.m. a crash was reported involving two commercial trucks and a passenger vehicle that was lodged underneath a tractor-trailer in the right-hand southbound lane.

The three southbound lanes were blocked for four hours as traffic used the inside shoulder to pass the crash scene.

The southbound off ramp to Donald/Aurora area was also closed. According to police, preliminary investigation indicated that as traffic was slowing a 1991 Acura Integra driven by Dustin Paul Campbell, 26, from Lyons, was southbound in the far right-hand lane when it was struck from behind by a commercial truck pulling a semi-trailer driven by Gurpinder Singh, 27, from Red Bluff, Calif.

The commercial truck rode over the top of the Acura and then rear-ended a tractor-trailer that was traveling in front of the Acura.

Because the Acura was crushed and pinned underneath the commercial truck driven by Singh, confirmation that the car’s occupants was deceased took some time until fire and medical responders were able to get enough access to check the car’s passenger compartment. Campbell was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Singh was transported to Oregon Health & Science University for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

A tow company was dispatched to the scene to remove the involved vehicles to a secondary location off the freeway to extricate the victim. Oregon State Police was assisted at the scene by fire personnel from Aurora Department, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and Woodburn Fire Department.

Oregon Department of Transportation coordinated traffic flow and scene management. The southbound lanes were re-opened completely about 9:15 p.m.

OSP troopers, with the assistance of Collision Reconstructionists, were continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash.

No enforcement action has been taken pending completion of the investigation. OSP is asking contact from any witnesses who have not provided a statement to investigators. Any witnesses are urged to call OSP Northern Command Center at 800-452-7888.
