Wilsonville mayor declares America Recycles Day

Wilsonville recycles more than national average

Mayor Tim Knapp has proclaimed Nov. 15 as America Recycles Day, a national observance to promote recycling and environmental awareness.

Sponsored by Keep America Beautiful, this year’s America Recycles Day theme, “I Want to be Recycled,” aims to educate people about the importance of recycling to the economy and environmental well-being as well as motivate occasional recyclers to become everyday recyclers.

Mayor Knapp said, “Recycling is one of the easiest things that we can do to help our environment. America Recycles Day presents a good opportunity to think about ways that you can reduce waste, reuse as much as possible, and recycle whenever you can.”

According to a report by the Tellus Institute with Sound Resource Management, “The national recycling rate is currently 35 percent. Increasing recycling to 75 percent of the nation’s waste would create nearly 1.5 million jobs by 2030.”

In 2012, the Wilsonville community recycled more than 58 percent of the city’s total waste stream — two-thirds greater than the national average. Wilsonville residents can continue to do their part by recycling.

Here are some tips to incorporate before and after this America Recycles Day:

  • Not all plastics can be recycled in your curbside recycling cart. Check the sticker on the cart for recyclability. A good rule to follow is bottles, tubs, jugs and jars can go into your cart.
  • Rinse all food and food residue from containers before recycling.
  • Food-soiled paper or cardboard, including pizza boxes, should not go into the recycling cart.
  • Plastic bags and film cannot be recycled in your curbside cart, but Republic Services does provide a plastic film drop-off location at 10295 SW Ridder Road in Wilsonville. Many grocery stores also provide plastic bag drop-off programs.
