A romping good time

Reindeer Romp and Bullwinkle Bash draws hundreds of runners

by: JOSH KULLA - All participants in the Reindeer Romp were given antlers to help them look festive as they ran through Wilsonvilles streets. Despite the damp and drizzly weather, Wilsonville residents turned out in fine fashion sporting reindeer antlers and bright red noses to the city’s first Reindeer Romp and Bullwinkle Bash on Saturday.

The event was a romp of a kids dash and an informal 5K fun run/walk and a bash of an after-party. There was even a visit from Santa and a giant moose trying to look like Santa.

The event used funds from the city’s HEAL (Healthy Eating, Active Living) grant. The HEAL coalition is responsible for promoting active and healthy lifestyles in Wilsonville.

According to Patty Brescia, parks and recreation senior programs manager, about 300 people, from those in strollers up to seniors, attended the inaugural event.

“I was super happy we had that many people,” Brescia said. “Everyone put on their antlers and had a good time. It was just a nice way for families to get active together.”

After the race/walk, families could relax and socialize at the Family Fun Center, visit with Santa and Bullwinkle and do some arts and crafts projects.

Brescia said the parks and rec department will definitely hold the event again next year.

“It was really neat. From little kids to seniors, they were out there together having a good time,” Brescia said.
