Former rep appointed to Youth Conservation Corps Advisory Committee

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber announced the appointment of former state Rep. Ron Adams (West Linn, Wilsonville) to the Oregon Youth Conservation Corps Advisory Committee. The appointment to the nine-member committee is effective for a three-year period.

The Oregon Youth Conservation Corps was created by the 1987 Oregon Legislature to emulate the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s. The purpose of OYCC, as established in statute, is “to establish a disadvantaged and at-risk youth work program in order to perform conservation work of public value in the most cost-effective manner.”

The summer conservation corps program serves 460 youth each summer with at least one crew in each of Oregon’s 36 counties. More than $862,000 in member wages were paid last summer with the help of local and federal partner matching funds.

OYCC also works with 24 alternative education programs statewide during the school year serving another 520 students. Crucial partners across all programs include the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, Oregon State Parks, the Marine Board and local city and county governments.
