Center gets cooking

BRESCIA

Community center staff and participants would like to thank the employees of Xerox and a private donor in Wilsonville for making the purchase of a new convection oven possible. The oven was one of the only items not replaced during last year’s building renovation, and staff recently realized it was not operating efficiently. It had been purchased secondhand when the building was built in 1984, and it was worn out. The new oven will allow for quicker meal preparation and reduced use of energy.

A group of Xerox employees presented the donation check to Mayor Tim Knapp at the Jan. 6 city council meeting, in addition to a donation to the Library Foundation and the Wilsonville Parks and Recreation Department’s Movies in the Park program.

The Xerox Community Involvement Program, based in Rochester, N.Y., has donated to a variety of city-funded efforts and nonprofit organizations in Wilsonville since 2004, according to Dick Spence. In addition to providing donations, Xerox employees volunteer their time onsite as part of the program. Their employees have participated in cleanup efforts at Engelman Park, serving lunches at the senior nutrition program and making popcorn at Movies in the Park.

Stability Ball class added

Instructor Jules Moody brings a new class to the center that will help improve posture, balance, core stability and strength. Moody brings 18 years of experience teaching a variety of fitness classes to the community center. Come on in and take the first stop toward getting in better shape for the new year.

Lunchtime lectures are back

We will be offering a series of topics related to “Healthful Aging” just in time for the new year. The lectures will be held at noon Wednesdays, Feb. 5 through Feb. 26. Participants may enjoy the center’s lunch or bring their own. The four topics will be diet, lifestyle, common aging complaints and natural skin care. The lectures will be led by naturopathic physician Dr. Kris Ritchey and nutritionist and lifestyle educator Karen McGeehan. There is no charge for the series, but pre-registration is preferred.

Get tax help

The center is now scheduling appointments for seniors and individuals of lower income who would like free assistance preparing this year’s income tax return. The appointments are available on Thursdays from Feb. 6 through April 10. This program is popular and appointment times fill up quickly, so contact us at 503-682-3727 at your earliest convenience.

Be an AARP Smart Driver

AARP’s safe driving program has been updated and improved, and you can sign up for it today. The six-hour course will be split into two sessions, Feb. 14 and Feb. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon. Pre-register for the sessions online or at the center. The class fee of $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members will be collected on the first day of class.

Plan your estate

Prepare your family for the future. In this workshop, attorney Richard Schneider will provide an overview of the necessary estate planning documents everyone should have in place for their security. Acquire current knowledge about wills, living trusts, health care documents, powers of attorney and topics related to guardianship and conservatorship. Explore retirement issues and discover strategies to minimize or eliminate Oregon estate taxes, avoid probate and retain complete control over your estate. This free workshop will be held on Feb. 25 from 10:30 a.m. to noon in classrooms 2 and 3. Call the community center to register.

The Wilsonville Community Center is located at 7965 SW Wilsonville Road. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 503-682-3727 or visit ci.wilsonville.or.us.
