Sheriff's Office warns of jury duty warrant scam

Caller impersonating police tells people they can pay their "fines" over the phone

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office reported Thursday it is getting fresh reports of phone scam that made the rounds in the area last year.

According to a CCSO press release, a Sheriff's Office Community Service Officer (CSO) reported that in the last week citizens are again being contacted by a subject falsely identifying himself as a Sheriff's Office employee who then runs a variation on the telephone “jury-duty warrant scam.”

Five reports of the scam were received by this CSO on Sunday, June 8 alone.

Here's how the community service officer describes the latest scam calls:

The victim gets a call from someone calling himself “Lt. Alan Smith” of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office – the agency does not employ anyone with that name.

The fraud caller then tells the victim that there is a warrant for the victim’s arrest because he or she didn't show up for jury duty. However, police said that “this is in no way Sheriff's Office policy.”

The caller then tells the victim they can pay the “fine” over the phone by purchasing a Green Dot MoneyPak at Wal-Mart. This can be used to reload a prepaid debit card as follows: moneypak.com/reloadhowitworks.aspx. The scammer then tells the victim to call back with the MoneyPak card number.

Police said the scammer is presumably using these numbers to re-load a prepaid card in their possession.

The alleged scammer’s phone number was the same for each caller in these recent cases.

This scam was reported last year in both Clackamas and Washington counties.

If a scammer calls you, identifies himself as a law-enforcement official and says you’re wanted for missing jury duty, tries to extract a “fine” or any other financial penalty, it's not the police. They say you should immediately report the call using our non-emergency line, 503-655-8211.
