'Relay' gets damp start, powers on

2014 Wilsonville Relay for Life takes a hit from the weather but participants shake it off

by: SPOKESMAN PHOTO: JOSH KULLA - The 24-hour Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's biggest fundraiser of the year. Thousands of local 'Relay' events are held in towns and cities across America. The 2014 Wilsonville Relay for Life was not handed any favors by this year's weather, which saw scattered showers occasionally sending people for cover while trying to walk around Town Center Park.

Featuring 17 teams and 178 registered participants, this year's event has so far raised over $30,000 toward the fight against cancer. And despite a slightly damp start, things settled down as dark fell, and this year's crop of Relay participants enjoyed a mellow evening underneath fast moving clouds and the odd star.

Relay for Life is the biggest fundraiser held each year by the American Cancer Society. Proceeds go to cancer research, and each year thousands of Relay events are held in towns and cities across the country.
