Seaside man charged with careless driving after failing to stop in time for traffic

A Seaside man was cited for careless driving by Oregon State Police Saturday after he reportedly ran into the back of another vehicle on Interstate 5 in Wilsonville and started a five-vehicle chain reaction crash.

Jesse D. Darling, 22, of Seaside, was cited in connection with the crash, which took place around 2 p.m. the afternoon of July 12 amid heavy traffic on I-5 near Wilsonville. A

ccording to police, traffic was stopped entirely near milepost 283 when Darling failed to stop in time and struck a Ford Escape driven by Jennifer Eisenzimmer Price, 45, of Portland. The impact pushed the Ford forward into the back of third vehicle, starting the chain of crashes.

Eisenzimmer Price was extricated from the Ford by responding firefighters. She received serious but non-life threatening injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. No other injuries were reported.

Darling reportedly told police he set his cruise control for 64 miles per hour and failed to see the stopped trafic in time.

The crash blocked the majority of the northbound lanes for over an hour. Traffic was eventually able to get by on the far right side of the traffic lanes, police said.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Wilsonville Police Department, and ODOT.
