Volunteers sought to count users of Wilsonville trails

Survey will take place Sept. 9-11 and Sept. 13 at various locations in Wilsonville

Photo Credit: SPOKESMAN FILE PHOTO: JOSH KULLA - The city of Wilsonville and the SMART transit agency want to know how many people are using public paths and trails like these shown here in Memorial Park as they are repaired during the citys annual WERK Day in May. Wilsonville’s South Metro Area Regional Transit (SMART) is looking for at least 16 volunteers to count and survey people using Wilsonville’s trails and paths.

The count will take place Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 9-11, and Saturday, Sept. 13 at many locations throughout Wilsonville. Counts will take place from 4-6 p.m. on weekdays and 9-11 a.m. on Sept. 13.

The count, which will take place in over 90 different locations nationwide, is part of the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project’s ongoing effort to gather accurate trail usage data using nationally standardized surveying and recording methods. The data is used to help decide where and when to build new trails and respond to the needs of trail users.

Data gathered through the program includes bike turning movements, direction of travel, rider/walker gender, and helmet use. It then is used to help cities plan and set priorities for trails, paths, sidewalks, and also apply for related grants.

In Wilsonville, volunteers can call Chelsey Reinoehl of SMART at 503-682-7790, extention 1497; or you can sign up online at ridesmart.com/BikePed2014.
