News in brief
County offering free microchipping
Clackamas County Dog Services sponsors monthly clinics on fourth Saturdays for dog owners to get free microchipping for their dogs with proof of a Clackamas County dog license. Free rabies vaccinations are also available to people who purchase or renew their county dog license during the clinic.
The next clinic is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 25. Everyone is welcome and no advance appointments are needed.
Because of limited space at Dog Services, the county is partnering with Clackamas Feed & Pet Supply at 15734 S.E. 130th Ave. in Clackamas to ensure there is sufficient and safe parking for all participants. The mobile clinic, run by Good Neighbor Vet, is set up in the parking lot at Clackamas Feed.
To get a free microchip and/or rabies vaccination, dog owners are asked to do the following:
First go to Dog Services at 13141 S.E. Highway 212 to either purchase a dog license or confirm that they already have a license. Then go to Clackamas Feed & Pet Supply, across Highway 212, to the Good Neighbor Vet mobile clinic to get the microchip and/or vaccination for their dog(s).
It only takes about 20 seconds for trained staff to insert a rice-grain-size microchip under the skin between a dog's shoulder blades. The chip can't be seen or felt by the dog, but can be read by veterinarians, shelters and rescue agencies using scanners so animal professionals can identify the lost dog and contact the dog's owner.
Clackamas County Dog Services provides a wide variety of services for county residents including dog licensing; sick, injured and emergency dog rescue; pet protective custody; bite investigations; quarantine of dogs that have bitten and are not rabies vaccinated and inspection of dog kennels. The shelter is located at 13141 SE Highway 212 in Clackamas. Details are online at www.clackamas.us/dogs/.
