City of Wilsonville needs better signage - and soon

Signs become very costly to business owners when stolen. It has become very apparent as a small-business owner in Wilsonville that there is a need for better signage throughout the city.

We recently opened a small retail business in Old Town on Boones Ferry Road (Northwest Man Cave). As you enter the business portion of Old Town, there is a sign that states “Old Town Neighborhood.”

A large percentage of people communicated to us that this sign is misleading and they turn around thinking there are no businesses ahead. It did not take long to figure out that we needed to have some temporary signs made to assist potential customers down Boones Ferry road toward Old Town.

We went to the city to understand what the regulations were on using signage in Wilsonville and followed the code to the letter. This went well for quite some time, until one was stolen, and then about three weeks later another one stolen, followed by the third and final sign being stolen.

At a cost of $20 per sign we quickly understood this would not be something that could continue. Our next venture was asking the city for some help with our problem. We asked for a change to the sign that states “Old Town Wilsonville” and to add “And businesses”. The response back from the city was that the council was working on a way finding signage program and until this was in effect we should try some traditional methods of advertising to let people know about us. In reading the March 12 issue of the Spokesman (“What’s your sign?”) it sounds as if the process has begun.

We look forward to serving on a community task force to help with this project. We also recently visited the town of Dallas, Ore., and found their way finding signs very helpful.
