Cross-country: Wilsonville's Taryn Rawlings cruises to victory at NWOC preview

Wildcats boys, girls place second behind rival Sherwood

by: GREG ARTMAN / FILE - Taryn Rawlings cruised to first place in the Northwest Oregon Conference cross-country preview race Sept. 11 at Blue Lake Park in Fairview.Any league opponents who forgot about Taryn Rawlings entering the season probably won’t need any more reminders.

Although the Wilsonville senior didn’t log an eye-popping time, she still dominated the girls field Sept. 10 during the Northwest Oregon Conference preview meet at Blue Lake Park in Fairview.

Rawlings crossed the finish line in 19 minutes 48 seconds to take first place, defeating St. Helens runner-up Patience Marshall by 1:38.

The reigning district champion also led the Wildcats girls to a second-place finish with 53 points in the team standings, where they finished behind rival Sherwood (41).

Wilsonville’s boys took second behind the Bowmen as well, scoring a 52.

Despite his teams’ performances, however, Wildcats coach David Barkley is convinced that at least four teams on each side “have a legitimate shot” at earning a top-two district finish and a group berth to the Class 5A state championships.

“The league has a lot of parity right now,” he said.

Barkley noted the absences of a couple Sandy runners and said they likely would have altered the team scores. He also acknowledged that Liberty did not participate in the race.

Then there’s the heat factor.

“How we race at 95 degrees says we are relatively tough, but that may not predict how fast teams are under normal conditions,” Barkley said.

Josh Meyer was the frontrunner for Wilsonville’s boys, who were represented by five athletes in the top 20. The junior clocked a 17:43 to take third place, matching his finish last year. Sherwood senior Ryan Pierce (17:37) snagged top honors.

Meanwhile, Wildcats senior Alex Tomlinson and junior Kody Wilde also had promising outings. Tomlinson took seventh in 18:07, and Wilde finished in 18:25 for 11th place.

“Josh, Alex and Kody are really doing a good job,” Barkley said. “This group works very well together and is improving pretty well.”

Barkley said he was also encouraged by the efforts of junior Carlos Villagomes and sophomore Kaleb Pace, who rounded out the boys’ team score.

Villagomes (18:26) placed 11th, shaving about 40 seconds off the time he recorded at the same meet a year ago.

Pace (19:23) took 20th, cutting his personal record by 1:05 and besting his time from last year’s NWOC preview by about 3 minutes.

“We have a good dynamic on the boys side of about 10 guys who have a shot at being someplace in our last three varsity spots,” Barkley said. “Our only question is whether or not we have enough time to be the team we want to be by the end of the season.”

On the girls side, Rawlings paced a group of nine Wilsonville runners in the top 25, including five in the top 16. Chloe Tomlinson and fellow junior Emily Gillett placed 10th and 11th, respectively, while senior Meagan Koeroghlian and freshman Haley Prusse finished three seconds apart at Nos. 15-16.

Gillett posted a career-best 22:55, while Koeroghlian clocked a season-best 23:16.

“Emily and Meagan have both stepped up big when we’ve needed them this fall,” Barkley said.  “The girls are faster than last year, but (they are) in a faster league, so it is still going to be close.”
