Football: Wilsonville assistant Greg Barton to face former team

Former Sandy coach, Wildcats gear up for NWOC finale

If it weren’t for the unfavorable commute, Greg Barton might still be the head football coach at Sandy High School.

Instead he’s an assistant coach for Wilsonville (5-3, 4-2 in the Northwest Oregon Conference), which will wrap up its regular-season slate at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at home against the Pioneers.

“I was very happy at Sandy, and I loved the kids there,” said Barton, an ex-NFL quarterback with several decades of coaching experience who joined Adam Guenther’s staff before the start of the 2013 season. “(Sandy) was a perfect fit for me. But (my wife and I) just had our eighth grandchild, and they’re all in the Beaverton area, and the drive to Sandy and the drive coming home at night — I was leaving at 5:30 (in the morning) and getting home at 11 (at night) every day. That was something that was bothering me. I was missing my grandkids’ baseball games, soccer games, school plays. That really bothered me.”

Sandy (6-2, 4-2) is coming off a 55-20 loss to Sherwood. The Pioneers’ only other defeat in conference play came at the hands of Parkrose.

The Wildcats are currently in a three-way tie for second place in the NWOC standings with Sandy and Parkrose. They are 3-0 in their all-time series against the Pioneers.
