Football: Wilsonville forfeits league win over Milwaukie

Wildcats report player's academic ineligibility to OSAA

by: JEFF GOODMAN / FILE - Coach Adam Guenther (above) and the Wilsonville football team have forfeited their league win over Milwaukie after reporting a violation to the OSAA.The Wilsonville football team has forfeited its league win over Milwaukie because it had an academically ineligible player in the game, school athletic officials said.

The violation, which occurred during the Wildcats’ 51-7 victory over the Mustangs at home Oct. 4, was discovered earlier this month and reported to the Oregon School Activities Association by the school.

“We became aware of a circumstance where we played a player, who wasn’t eligible, in the final minutes of the game,” athletic director Dennis Burke said. “Based on that, we’ve taken responsibility and self-reported our mistake. ... Part of handling it correctly is reporting it to the OSAA.”

The violation nullifies a key league win for Wilsonville, which scored 30 points in the third quarter of the game to pull away from Milwaukie. The infraction also hands the Wildcats their first loss to the Mustangs in program history. They are now technically 3-1 in the all-time series.

Perhaps most importantly, the violation could have ramifications for playoff positioning. Wilsonville slides to No. 14 in the Class 5A rankings, while Milwaukie (1-7, 1-5 in the Northwest Oregon Conference) — which is winless on the field — climbs to No. 23. The top 24 teams advance to the postseason.

The Wildcats’ overall record is now 4-4 — instead of 5-3 — and their league record is now 3-3.

“I’m disappointed — it’s something that should’ve been preventable,” said coach Adam Guenther, who added there were miscommunications between the player in question and others involved. “We pride ourselves on honesty and integrity. So when we realized the situation, we had to take the high road.”

Guenther’s team, which is coming off a 45-7 rout of Liberty, is scheduled to wrap up its league slate against Sandy (6-2, 4-2) at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at Randall Stadium.

“This is a learning experience,” Guenther said. “I should’ve known. That’s on me. Our administration and our support staff do a phenomenal job. It was totally preventable, and I should’ve been aware of it.

“But we’re still in the thick of everything. We’re gonna move on. Either way, we’ll still be playing (beyond the regular season). And it doesn’t affect how we’re approaching Sandy.”
