College basketball: Wilsonville alum Mike MacKelvie faces former team with Regis
Senior logs double-double at Alaska-Anchorage
For Mike MacKelvie, the first road trip of the season was a homecoming of sorts.
The Wilsonville alumnus recorded a double-double as the Regis mens basketball team faced Alaska-Anchorage, the program he left after last season.
MacKelvie scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in 30 minutes of action Nov. 16, but he and the Rangers (1-1) couldnt overcome a 13-point halftime deficit in an 88-74 loss to the Seawolves.
MacKelvie, who started his collegiate career at Eastern Arizona College, transferred to Regis a year after averaging 5.0 points and 2.8 rebounds for UAA.
Regis point guard Kevin Marshall, who was also a standout player for the Wildcats in high school, had 14 points and three assists against Alaska-Anhorage.
MacKelvie, Marshall and the Rangers will play their next six games at home in Denver. For more information, visit www.regisrangers.com.
Gearhart returns for Rice
Seth Gearhart is back in action for the Rice mens basketball team after sustaining a season-ending foot injury last year.
Through three games, the Wilsonville alumnus was averaging 5.7 points and 3.7 rebounds in 26 minutes.
Gearhart had 10 points and a career-high three blocks Nov. 15 against Texas A&M, but the Owls (1-2) gave up a three-pointer in the final seconds of a 68-65 road loss.
The 6-foot-7, 215-pound junior forward, who earned first-team all-state honors as a senior at Wilsonville, started in all 20 of the games in which he played at Rice last season but hurt his foot in a win over Houston.
The Owls next home game is slated for Nov. 23 against Princeton. For more information, visit www.riceowls.com.
