Swimming: New pack carries Wilsonville boys in seminal NWOC victory at St. Helens

Underclassmen earn key victories as Wildcats edge Lions

It was another sign that the Wilsonville boys swimming team is on its way back.

After being crushed by St. Helens the last two seasons, the Wildcats captured an 89-80 victory Dec. 19 to remain unbeaten in Northwest Oregon Conference competition.

They won eight of the 11 events, including two of the three relay races, in their second league meet of the year. The victory followed a win over Sandy in their NWOC opener a week earlier.

Sophomore transfer Noah Norris led Wilsonville with victories in the 100-yard backstroke (59.9 seconds) and 100 butterfly events (56.6).

Standout freshmen Chris Glaess and Derek Webb also made key contributions. Glaess won the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes 19 seconds, while Webb clocked a 1:17.5 edge St. Helens’ Jacob Zartman (1:17.6) for the best finish in the 100 breaststroke.

Two other WHS swimmers posted victories as well. Kyle Ruud took first place in the 50 free with a time of 27.6 seconds. Drew Zimmerman clocked a 1:05 to win the 100 free.

The Wildcats also won the 200 and 400 free relay races.

It was a landmark victory for Wilsonville, which fell to the Lions 137-33 last year and 114-33 two seasons ago.

Star senior Christie Halverson earned the Wildcats’ only two wins on the girls side, where St. Helens prevailed 97-76. She took first place in the 200-yard freestyle race with a time of 2:00 and also won the 100 butterfly in 1:04.

Wilsonville was second in the girls 200 free relay race, touching the wall a second after the victorious Lions. St. Helens won all three relays despite competing with just a dozen girls.

The Lions’ other victorious swimmers included Jackie Prevish in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke, Brook Hopkins in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, Tori Edwards in the 500 free and Hannah Spears in the 100 free.
