Dynamic guard drains game-winning shot as Wildcats fall to Falcons for first time since 2008

Now, though, the Wildcats probably know too much.

Liberty’s dynamic sophomore guard devastated them by draining a game-winning jump shot with about 20 seconds left, dealing them a 39-38 defeat Feb. 18 in Hillsboro.

Alvarado delivered the dagger on a night that was characterized by dreary endings for Wilsonville (17-5, 10-2 in the Northwest Oregon Conference), which had its 12-game series winning streak snapped.

And that was probably the least of the Wildcats’ worries.

They nearly lost a major step in the race for the league title, but they remained tied for first place after Sherwood lost to Parkrose. They were scheduled to meet the Bowmen on the road in a highly anticipated rivalry finale Feb. 25.

Wilsonville, which defeated Parkrose 61-44 at home Feb. 20, mustered a season low in offensive production against Liberty to drop a road game in Oregon for the first time all season.

And the Wildcats didn’t give themselves much material for praise in the final stages of the game, squandering a late lead with several costly mistakes.

Wilsonville was squarely in control, capping an 8-0 run on a basket by senior Tyler Martin to take a 38-32 lead with less than two minutes remaining.

Then the Falcons (14-7, 8-3) flew back into it.

Alvarado drained a 3-pointer to cut the Wildcats’ lead in half with 1:19 to play.

Liberty then stole an inbounds pass with about 44 seconds left and trimmed its deficit to 38-37 on a layup by Jacob Mast.

Wilsonville senior Zach Malvar was fouled with 33 seconds remaining but missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity, setting the stage for Alvarado’s jumper.

After a timeout, the Wildcats missed two shots in the final 10 seconds.

There were signs of trouble for Wilsonville well before the dramatic shot by Alvarado, who scored 12 of his game-high 14 points in the second half.

One was the team’s narrow win over the Falcons at home Jan. 21, when it gave up a season-high 64 points and needed clutch plays down the stretch after relinquishing a double-digit lead.

Another was its futility in the first half of the teams’ second meeting. The Wildcats scored the first seven points of the game but added just four in the second quarter to enter the break down 12-11.

They had more points in the third quarter (14) than in the entire first half.

Sophomore wing Tyler Hieb finished with a team-high 12 points, including 10 after halftime. Martin added eight points, including five in the fourth quarter. Freshman wing Zach Reichle battled through foul trouble to add seven.

Wilsonville hadn’t lost to Liberty since a 50-49 setback at home Jan. 18, 2008. It responded by winning the next dozen meetings, including eight by double-digit margins.
