Baseball: Wilsonville clipped by Churchill in 5A play-in round

The Wilsonville baseball team’s season ended in all-too-familiar fashion.

One-run losses plagued the Wildcats all year, and they came up short by the narrowest of margins again — with their first campaign under Bryn Card hanging in the balance.

The outcome in the Class 5A play-in round: Eugene-Churchill 2, Wilsonville 1.

The Wildcats wrapped up their season with a 10-16 overall record, including an 8-9 mark in the Northwest Oregon Conference. They took fifth place in the league standings.

Wilsonville wedged its way into the postseason with the No. 24 ranking in Class 5A, setting up its meeting with Churchill in a win-or-go-home game.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the third inning but gave up the two deciding runs in the fourth.

Matt Kelly led Wilsonville with three hits and an RBI, but Lancers pitchers Keegan Bradley and Hank Forrest combined to allow just six hits.

Wildcats pitcher Tanner Crooks tossed six innings and tallied six strikeouts.

Sandy and Sherwood were the only NWOC teams to reach the 16-team state tournament.
