Online books sure to keep kids reading

West Linn-Wilsonville students recieve free access to thousands of online titles

With the lazy days of summer stretching before them, the last thing children may want to think about is keeping — much less building on — the skills they gained over the past school year.

However, parents have a good reason to work to keep children’s brains engaged over the summer.

Educators and experts warn of a “summer slide,” one term for kids’ loss of academic interests and skills over the summer months.

Literacy skills are one of the strongest markers of academic success. That’s one reason the Oregon Department of Education wants to help organizations like the West Linn-Wilsonville School District keep kids reading over the summer months.

A new partnership between ODE and Capstone Digital Publishing is giving students the opportunity to access thousands of books online this summer, at no charge. Titles range from picture and chapter books to graphic novels as well as classics. Readers may not find the blockbuster books that have long wait-lists at local libraries, but with category headings like “Hobbies and How To” and “Scary and Gross,” students are sure to find something to pique their interest and keep them reading this summer.

Users can choose to read independently or listen instead, and they can choose to have sentences highlighted while in narration mode. The collection includes Spanish and dual language offerings.

ODE’s summer reading partnership with myON will be available at no cost until Sept. 15. To gain access to myON Books, visit myon.com. Enter school name “Oregon Readers, Oregon Department of Education,” with the case-sensitive username and password both as “read.” A mobile app is available for Apple and Android. Visit thefutureinreading.myon.com for download information.
