West Linn and Wilsonville’s high schools both were named again to the Washington Post’s list of America’s most challenging high schools.

West Linn High School appeared fourth on the list of Oregon’s high schools, with Wilsonville High just one place behind at No. 5.

by: FILE PHOTO - Downs“We are very proud of the hard work of our students and team here at Wilsonville High School,” Principal Aaron Downs said. “The team is committed to building a rigorous master schedule that allows for student flexibility. Wilsonville High School provides a variety of challenging options to help prepare our students for college and careers.”

The Post ranking reflects a measurement of the number of college-level tests schools offer in a given year. Those tests include Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education.

That number is divided by the number of graduates in that year. The newspaper takes into account the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies as well as the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high-school years.

The Post uses those numbers to create an index ranking. West Linn’s index number was 2.857 and Wilsonville’s was 2.731. The top two schools ranked in Oregon, Corbett Charter and Corbett High School, were 15.679 and 11.114, respectively. Nearby, Lake Oswego High School, ranked 7, received an index score of 2.140.

WL-WV Superintendent Bill Rhoades offered congratulations to both schools and to the district as a whole.

West Linn High School Principal Lou Bailey pointed to his school’s history of appearing on the Post’s list.

“It is always special when West Linn High School is recognized for our academic accomplishments,” he said. “I am especially proud of the consistency WLHS has around being on Washington Post’s list for the past five or six years, as this is extremely telling (of) the academic work from our students and staff.”
